Goodbye Iceland

Our flight from Paris to Iceland was delayed by 9 hours (effectively a day).  So when we finally arrived in Keflavik, we were pooped.  Thankfully, our rental car was still available and our Airbnb was only a 35 minute drive from the airport. Our total stay in Iceland was only 36 hours, but we had a blast! Each day we visited a pool within 10 minutes drive of our rental.  Both pools were outdoor, had at least one water slide, and two hot pots (hot tubs).  The pools were so warm that we barely noticed the brisk outside air and ended up all getting a little pink from sun exposure because we stayed for so long.

Outside one of the pools we found a playground with soccer fields, a small zip line, an in-ground trampoline, climbing wall and more! Gordy could barely have been happier.

And, even better, Gordy made friends with a few Icelandic kids at the second pool.  The three kids became instant buddies and they helped him learn how to dive off the diving block!  When they said goodbye, they made him promise to come back to visit them again someday.

For food, dining out seemed a bit too costly (not to mention too much effort).  So, we went for a shop at a supermarket, Neto, and found lots of yummy fixings for our stay.

Our one big adventure was going to the Reykjadalur hot springs river for a 3km hike and a lounge/soak in the river.  The hike took about an hour uphill and Gordy was a total champion hiking most of it by himself.  Todd was even happy about the hike because the hot springs were an absolutely fantastic payoff.

Though the U.S. had just announced it was dropping its negative Covid test requirement for international travelers, the change would not go into effect until 12:01am Sunday.  Since our flight departed a few hours before that, the three of us had to endure nasal probes to the tune of $150!  We think we may have been some of the very last passengers to that delightful process.

As we headed for the airport to start our journey home, Gordy got sad.  His little lip started quivering and tears slowly rolled down his cheeks.  Over and over he kept saying, “goodbye Iceland” in a sad little voice.  He really loved Iceland and was sad to leave so quickly.  Todd and I enjoyed our stay also, so we agreed that we’d all return to the island someday.

Everything seemed to be going so well… until we got to the airport.  Our airline, Iceland Air, had 5 flights all departing within 30 minutes of each other.  And, due to staffing shortages, the check-in and baggage drop area didn’t open until 1-1/2 hours before the first flight left.  Even better, when the checkin did open, there were only two windows open, so the checkin line ended up taking 1-1/2 hours to get through.  Then, I failed the security check 3 times due to a chemical residue that they said was detected all over me (hands, clothes, shoes, and backpack). After multiple physical checks and a check of my carryons, I was cleared to go.  They said that the chemical residue could likely have been from the sulfer at the hot springs that got on my backpack and shoes which then transferred onto my clothing.

Once we made it through security we had about 20 minutes until our plane departed, which should have been enough time.  Then we hit the immigration line with all the same people who suffered with us in the checkin line.  Thirty minutes later, we were cleared to go to our gate, but were then stopped by officers  who said that Todd had to go with them because he’d been randomly selected for an additional round of screening. Todd went with them into a room and Gordy and I ran to our gate to try to hold the plane.  In the end, the airline held the plane for us and we made it to NYC, but we are all a little traumatized by the stressful experience and we are pretty sure that we will not be flying with Iceland air again.

After lots of traveling, we are all pretty happy with our trip - it was great to see so many great people and places. That being said, we are very much looking forward to getting home to our house and regular life.  Gordy says he missed his friends and his Nana, and I think we could all use some regular sleeping in our own beds.

French finale

We had a wonderful stay in Sault. After lots of hugs and promises of a future visit, we started on our road trip to Hossegor.

Sadly, Gordy had a tummy bug and within 20 minutes of getting on the road and he vomited twice. That seemed to be the end of his tummy problems though because he then passed out in the backseat and slept for the next 4-1/2 hours. We finally woke him up when we got to Toulouse for some lunch, a load of laundry at a laverie, and a swim at an awesome pool that had a kiddie pool with a mini slide.

We eventually made it to Hossegor where we spent a few days at our friend’s, Thierry and Delphine, house. We ate delicious food, enjoyed the beach, and caught up with our great friends.

An hour before we were supposed to walk out the door and begin the next leg of our drive, Gordy popped a fever of 102.7. So Delphine and Todd grabbed some fever reducer from the pharmacy and then we said our goodbyes and  headed out with some seriously modified travel plans (i.e. no pool swim along the way). The medicine did it’s job and Gordy felt some relief for a while. But, by the time we got to our hotel that night, his temp had gone up to 104 and he started puking. We were able to get some more medicine in him and within an hour, his temp had gone down below 103 - phew!

After a good nights sleep, Gordy’s fever had gone away and he seemed like his old self again. So, we packed up and made the final trek to Paris on his birthday! We made a few food / pool and water slide / toilet stops along the way, and finally ended up at our hotel for the night in Paris.

We head to Iceland tomorrow for our final destination before we return home.

Machete

Our Sault family has a cat named Machete that is the funniest creature. She loves to be petted on her belly and feet and she will purr louder than ever if you get out her brush and brush her. Gordy took to her straight away and she seemed pretty happy to have Gordy around also. Whenever we couldn’t find Gordy, all we had to do was find Machete and there he’d be, just petting and cuddling her. Gordy will miss you silly kitten!

Gordy’s 6th birthday celebration

Our French family is so wonderful - since Gordy’s birthday is coming up, they organized a day of celebrations.  First, Justine and Iklef took us to an “accrobranche park” which is basically an obstacle course built in the trees for kids.  For about an hour, Gordy flew back and forth through the courses which included small zip lines, balance beams, moving bridges, a long foot path with different things to walk/race on, and so much more.  He could not have been happier!

Then, we went to a separate area with three tree houses and netted walkways between each house and a slide down to the ground.

After we finished in the forest, Justine’s brother, Etienne, took us on a hike to a beautiful waterfall where we all got into the VERY cold pool at the bottom.

We finished our day with some pétanque, a delicious veggie bbq dinner, and a birthday song and cake that Justine’s friend brought up from a bakery in Marseille.

Merci to all of these amazing people who made his day so special.

This magical place called Sault

My friend Justine’s village in the mountains in the south of France is an incredibly special place.

When you drive here, it’s about an hour from the larger village Avignon, and there’s a corner that you turn on your way in where the mountain opens up to a picture perfect view of Sault in the valley. It’s one of my favorite views of all time.

The houses in this village look like small castles, lavender grows in the fields all around, red poppies grow wild, and the people are warm and welcoming. Most importantly, our friends are wonderful.

We’ve spent the last few days meeting my god-daughter Sylia and Justine’s husband Iklef for the first time, saying hello and then good bye again to Justine’s mom (Pascale) before she left for a trip, helping to plant lettuce in their garden, going to local farms and farmers markets for fresh produce and juicy olives, visiting a goat farm for cheese, eating croissants and coffee for breakfast, enjoying delicious vegetarian French and Moroccan food (thank you Justine and Iklef), and cuddling Machete the kitty.

Our stay here is coming to an end and it will be hard to say good bye.

Journee complete a Paris

Since we only had one day in Paris, we did our best to fit in the most important things:

We took a coffee and croissant at a cafe. (We sat indoors and not outside on the patio due to omnipresent smokers.)

We walked a street market outside of our hotel where we found fresh olives, cherries, and apricots for a snack.

We took the subway to see the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower.

We went to a lidl supermarket where we found a beautiful tomato, grapes, pesto, and cheese to add to our street market snacks.

We stopped in a boulangerie for a baguette.

We finished our night in our hotel room with a picnic feast.

We were all very happy with our day and were only sad to not have more time in this beautiful city.  Tomorrow, we pack up and board the train to Avignon where we begin our Sault adventure.
