update #4

After a week of improvement and seemingly normal life, Gordy came down with a temperature of 103.6 on Tuesday night.  So, we started back in on the Motrin every 6-8 hours until 12:30pm the next day when (while on Motrin) his fever increased to 105 in a matter of 30 minutes.  The doctors were not available to take a phone call, so we gave him Tylenol and took some much appreciated advice from Kera to put him in a lukewarm shower to get his temp down.  The shower seemed to help because he said that he was hungry after and he wanted apples and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

After his lunch, we packed up and headed into the Kapolei urgent care which managed to fit him in between other appointments.  They did lots of blood tests, chest x-rays, a urinalysis, and a triple swab for covid, the flu, and another virus.

All of his test results were normal except for one which was high due to inflammation in his body.  So, they sent us home with lots of apologies about not knowing what was going on with him, directions to continue giving him motrin and tylenol, and a promise to call us the next day.

Gordy's pediatrician called today and has settled on the idea that this is a brand new viral infection that he caught once he went back to school last week or this week.  We were instructed to wait this out and to schedule a next day apt for Monday if his fever has not disappeared by Sunday.

Most of today was pretty good for Gordy.  We gave him Motrin (due to fever increases) pretty much every 6-7 hours and he seemed relatively normal / happy... until about 40 minutes ago.  As I sat here writing this update at 11pm, I heard his bedroom door open and some fumbling going on near his toilet.  When I went in to check on him, he was shaking uncontrollably and was complaining about being cold.  So, after he finished on the potty, I took him into his room and tried cuddling him.  My body heat was not enough, so Todd came in and used his bare chest as a heater.  We convinced him to take Tylenol, put a long sleeve shirt on him, and ended up covering him in three blankets.  He proceeded to shake and complain of leg pain for the next 20 minutes until he finally fell asleep.

Our thermometer couldn't pick up his temperature because Gordy couldn't keep his mouth closed, but an attempted measurement of his armpit produced a 103 degree reading.  I just hope it's not actually higher.  Hopefully he's sweating this thing out and he'll wake up tomorrow feeling much better and will be on his way to a final recovery.

I don't think any of us can take much more sickness...

update #3

Sadly, Gordy's temperature did not improve over the weekend.  Each day he woke up with a temp of about 99.3 which slowly escalated to 101.5 throughout the day.  So, I messaged his doctor Sunday night with an update.

On Monday, my head started hurting, my body started getting uncomfortable, and after lunch, I knew I had to lay down.  I ended up not moving from the couch (except for toilet breaks) for the next 6 hours while my symptoms worsened.

By the time Gordy's doctor called on Monday evening, I could barely push my headache aside to listen to him on the phone.  What I did get out of his call was that he thought that the antibiotic that Gordy was on was not enough and he wanted to switch it to a different one (Augmentin) that included two antibiotics.  I didn't have much fight in me, so I agreed and he called it in to the pharmacy for pickup the next day.

I spent the rest of the evening crying through stomaching a piece of plain toast and water and then promptly put myself to bed with some nighttime medicine.  Gordy was unchanged.  The next day, I woke up with an eye infection and the same symptoms as the night before, so I called the doctor.  The doctor decided that I had a bacterial infection similar to Gordy, so she called me in a prescription for Augmentin.

Todd (who seems unscathed by these viral and bacterial infections) picked up our medicines Tuesday evening and we started in on our first doses.  By Wednesday morning, we were both improved.  Gordy's fever never went above 99.5, his headaches had disappeared, and his tummy felt fine.  My eye infection improved, my headaches went away, and my body aches lessened.

So, Gordy was cleared to go to school today and I worked a full day.  Gordy's fever hasn't returned yet (as far as we know) and we both keep slowly improving.  I seem to be a few days behind him on this thing, but the meds are working and we see the light at the end of this nasty tunnel!

update #2

Gordy spent the last few days home with a fever and headaches, so I finally called the doctor and he told us to come in right away.  We spent two hours in there explaining all of his symptoms day by day for the last two weeks, doing a bunch of blood tests, and then meeting again with the doctor to talk through them.  In the end, the doctor thinks that the most likely diagnosis is that he has a nasty sinus infection which he hopes is treatable with antibiotics.  And, if by the end of the weekend, he still has a fever, we are to call the doctor again so that he can start in on more tests.

Gordy has only been on the antibiotics for 24 hours, but he's still very lethargic and has a low grade fever when not dosed up with Motrin.  His appetite has somewhat improved (or he's just a huge fan of cinnamon and sugar toast), and he has bouts of happy energy.

We are taking it day by day and are hoping that these meds will kick in soon.

sick-bug update

Over a week later, Gordy and I are still working hard to fight this "darn sick bug".  Our fevers seem to be gone most days (although not all), we are coughing a little less, my skin no longer hurts to the touch, and we are blowing fewer buckets of snot out of our noses.  We are more happy to be up and doing light activities, and we don't get as winded as easily.

Our symptoms have seemed very covid-ish, so we've both tested and our tests have been negative.  While we are happy about our covid-free diagnoses, this sick-bug is no picnic.  It's long lasting, really takes you down, and the amount of snot that we are expressing from our bodies is startling.  From what we've heard from other parents at Gordy's school, lots of other kids and their families have been out with similar symptoms, so it appears that it's going around - yay!

Hopefully we are near the end and we can get back to our regular, fun life.

down with another sick-bug

Now that 1st grade has started, Gordy is exposed to a ton of wonderful infectious diseases on a daily basis.  Recently, a few kids in his class have been absent due to illness so it was only a matter of time before our family contracted something.

Gordy woke up two days ago with a fever and a stuffy nose.  In the last 48 hours, it escalated to a near constant 103 degree fever (unless medicated), clogged sinuses, loss of appetite, and a nasty cough.  Now, it's migrated to me.

Hopefully it passes quickly so that we can enjoy our holiday weekend.  In the meantime, the two of us have posted up on the couch with a silly movie, tissues, and cups of hydration drinks.
